What is BPH?

What is the Prostate?

The prostate is an organ found only in males. Normally, it plays a role in the reproductive system. The prostate stores and secretes a slightly alkaline (basic) fluid that supports spermatazoa. The fluid normally constitutes 20-30% of ejaculate and helps to neutralize the acidic conditions of the vagina and help spermatazoa survive. Therefore, the prostate plays an important role in sexual health.

What is the Bladder?

When the body produces urine, it is stored in the bladder. Once the bladder is filled, pressure nerves sense that the bladder is stretched and send a signal to the brain that the bladder is full.

What is the Urethra?

The urethra is the tube that goes from the bladder to the penis. It carries either urine or semen.

What Happens When the Prostate Enlarges?

Having an enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) causes pressure to be placed on the bladder. The pressure causes abnormal urination depending on where the pressure is placed. If it is on the bladder then frequent urination will become an issue because the bladder will constantly think it’s full. If the pressure is placed on the urethra, problems with urinary flow can develop.
